A Social Commentary [Feb. 21st, 2006|02:46 am]
I think a lot. Bear with me...

By reading this, I assume you either found my profile familiar or intriguing in some way. You may have seen a photo, read some comment, or noticed common interests or friends. Being here at all would suggest we also share some interest in being social. Maybe you're here to meet interesting people or to keep in touch with friends. I'm here for both.

Everyone's felt rejected, smothered, threatened, or toyed with at some point in their social life. So, we tend to be defensive, acting shy, pretentious, abrasive, shallow, or otherwise preventing others from getting too close, too fast. Often people apply arbitrary social rules that dictate their behavior and expectations of others. (e.g. Girls play hard to get while guys won't take no for an answer.) Unfortunately, most people play this "game" by different rules and eventually come to hate how others always seems to be playing games with them. Go figure.

Here's an alternative: reciprocation. Healthy social boundaries are important. But these can be flexible, gradually adjusting to accommodate mutual comfort levels. With each interaction, we either invite each other closer or withdraw some. The key to not getting hurt is simply to make small adjustments. By responding naturally, with neither hesitation nor anticipation, these exchanges can quickly sort through the unknowns.

Care to see how? )
